But before you pour it has to grab your attention.
I am a big fan of the labels @archiveswhisky designed for their bottles. The font combined with the botanical vintage fish is just gorgeous in all its simplicity! Luckily I know they also bottle some fantastic and unique whisky. This Ardmore was matured in an ex-Laphroaig barrel! So not only does the bottle look good, it should be an interesting experience.
Starts of fruity. Mostly white fruit with granny smith apples and pear. There is some peat which shows itself as minerals. Wet stones, sand and play doh clay. Followed by baked apples and grilled pears. Grass with wildflowers and a hint of char.
Adding some water makes the peat drift away and add more sour notes. Citric fruit with lemon and grapefruit. Are there some Laphroaig medicinal / bandaids notes appearing? Lemon throat candy! In the back there are some sneaky vanilla notes.
Thick oily mouthfeel. Quite hot on arrival, chili peppers which is not surprising considering the ABV. Charred lemon. Toasted bread with sour jam topping. Black pepper and bitter oak notes at the back end. Very interesting transition from the nose!
Water settles down the whisky while still retaining a great mouthfeel. Vanilla. More ash and cereal notes. Burnt toast with butter and sugar sprinkled on top of it. Sweetness makes a return with some water!
A bitter and dry finish. Ash with lemon hard candy. No sweetness here. Grassy. Charred wood. It gives me a mental image of a sandy beach with lemon water ice cream.
Some water unlocks more ash, charred wood and wet stones. The finish is shorter, but still lingers for quite a while.
Usually my favourite part is nosing whisky, you have all the time in the world to dissect and analyse the different flavours. But the palate is the star of the show with this whisky. It tastes very spirit driven and matured in a tired old barrel, which worked out well here. I didn't find much Laphroaig character, but this whisky did have some nice twists and turns. Not only a good bottle to look at, but there is also good whisky inside for sure!

Me just trying to knock one out, and my mother screaming out “son of a bitch!” Because the vacuum container opened up and fell down the stairs making a big ass mess.
