Life is an ever moving stream, and I have found that it is usually best to flow with it. After Covid put a halt to our plans, Chattanooga experienced a horrific tornado. It was tragedy after tragedy. But then, the nightmare turned into something beautiful. The loveliest couple needed a home while they rebuilt theirs, and we needed them. For the last 18 months, we have had the best neighbors and friends. Now, their real and forever home is complete, and their journey moves forward. I don’t like change, but I know that it’s necessary. The home can ALWAYS be changed! The ugliest home can be made cute and charming with some investment and hard work! However, the land and location can not be changed.

Here are a few important things to discuss and consider when purchasing. What are the surroundings? (I discussed this more in detail yesterday) Are you wanting to be closer into a town or more rural? Do you want to be near industrial farming or away from it? If you want to farm organically you’ll want to be away from row crops. What restrictions may the property have? It would be a tragedy to buy land and not be able to do whatever you want with it because there are restrictions to animals, buildings or fencing.

Do you own the mineral and timber rights to the property. Does the property have any easements? What are your goals for homesteading? Will the land fit those needs? Do you want a local source for water (well or spring fed water)? And lastly soil health? Almost any soil can be amended (unless it’s a rock lol!) however this can take time, energy, labor and money, and the importance of this will factor back into your goals for your homestead as well.
