It's #FuzzFriday pedal geeks so let's talk fuzz faces.
The EHX Big Muff was the first stompbox I ever bought and it influenced my fuzz tastes for a long time but I also grew up idolising Jimi Hendrix (still do, obvs) so it was inevitable that I'd find my way to the fuzz face sooner or later. The more variations I play the more I realise it's the perfect fuzz for me; I love its growl, its fat low end and how responsive it is to pick attack and volume knob clean up.

These are the three fuzz face style pedals I own and each one has their strengths. First one I bought was the Sisyphuzz by @bmf_effects on the recommendation of someone at @vintagerareguitars in Bath. I didn't realise it was a FF style circuit at the time, I just fell in love with its warmth and clarity. It uses silicon transistors but is voiced to sound germanium. It's incredibly stable and consistent for a FF and still kicks out massive fuzz tones at low volumes which isn't always the case with other fuzz faces. It's beautifully smooth but roll your tone control back and you can sound like Ron Asheton.

The Germanium Fuzz made by @expressofx is an absolute monster! It's the loudest of the three and has the most gradual clean up. With my Jam Pedals wah placed before, it has more hiss than the other two but still, if I could only take one pedal to a gig it would probably be this.

The @jampedals Fuzz Phrase only arrived yesterday so I haven't had a lot of time to play with it but first impressions are that it's a little less unruly than the Expresso but still sounds huge and has great clean up. Unsurprisingly it works a treat with the wah! This is the fuzz face that's going to live on my board, right after Jam's Retro Vibe. And with the wah, pure Jimi! Altho it's got the same transistors (I think) as the Expresso - and sounds very similar - it feels different to play. A bit more even and compressed maybe. This is something non-guitarists don't understand about pedals; one can sound the same as another but the way they feel can be completely different. Like driving a car, gets you around just the same but the user experience varies wildly.

The Sisyphuzz is a germanium voiced FF style fuzz, warming the tone, and I've set the Carcosa on a low gain setting with the hi cut adding some sparkle. Cleans up really nicely and responds incredibly well to pick attack. Oodles of fun! Apologies for the blues rock wankery.
