Some time passed already, since we posted the larvae of the Pseudacanthicus cf. spinosus "L160".
So far we almost had no losses and they are growing good.
In this picture you can see the development of the fry between day 2 and day 9.
As you can see the pigmentation in the head area starts allready somewhere between day 2 and 3. The yolk sac was gone after around 10 days, with some larvae being slightly faster than others.
In the meantime the babies turned almost completely brown with some light patterns. Some of them are now already seperated into smaller groups in bigger tanks. This should help with better grow-out and less deformities while getting bigger.

After exactly a week we decided to empty the breeding cave, not knowing if the batch is still good
or even how big it is, since the big male blocked the view into the breeding cave and started to be a bit more active going in and out with the body, which can cause damage to the eggs/larvae.
It seems, the male managed to incubate the eggs successfully on the first time and we couldn't notice any eggs dying off. We estimate an amount of around 350 - 400 larvae now in total. We are happy that the couple harmonizes but soon we have to get some more raising tanks for all of those "L160" babies. In the mean time they are separated in bigger breeding boxes, till they are big enough for own little tanks.
Stay tuned for a breeding report on our website

Our big Pseudacanthicus cf. spinosus "L160" pair seems to get along well and are tunneling since two days.
Today the male started with shaking movements, which normally indicate a soon spawning. We are curious if they manage to spawn and keep you up to date. Stay tuned!

Papilla close up "sex difference" - post of Pseudacanthicus cf. spinosus "L160"
This robust build pleco makes sexing easy. The bigger the specimens are, the more the secondary sexual traits are visible. But also with this species, thin, young females can be really similar to young males.
From the side view you can see that te male looks higher and bulkier, with a fatter tail and stronger spikes all over the body.
Also the heads show differences. A males head ends in a more round snout with a straight head line, where as females show a slightly convex head line with a pointier end.
Odontodes on the snout itself can be seen with both sexes. This male shows them more dominant.
The gills are covered also with odontodes, which are with the male more dominant.
The hard ray of the pectorals show especially with males a longer and curved shape.
Sometimes sexing from top is the easiest with Pseudacanthicus spp.. The male has a huge head compared to the body and also keeps his thick body shape till the tail. Females are broadest between the pectoral and pelvic fins. The head is smaller and the tail region looks thinner.
The heads can sometimes look relatively similar in young age with both sexes. The male tends to have a rounder snout with more odontodes on it. The eyes sit further apart with males. Females look smoother around the borders of the head, which ends in a more pointy snout.
To judge the sex only by the papilla shape itself is rather hard with this species, since it changes shape and size with contracting movements. In this case the male seems to have even a rounder and bigger papilla, which is with most other plecos a feminine trait. Also this female shows yellow dots around the papilla, which we could also observe and fotograph with females of other pleco species.
