01 - latent /// this song is a bit of an old one now, and was a genesis for how I approached working with my recordings after it.
it was born out of another song that wasn't really working out but in which I heard all these strange and beautiful sounds — air cycling and vibrating, little melodies in the rushing currents — in the tail ends or unused sections of the project's tracks. cutting up those scraps and creating something entirely new from them gave me confidence and excitement to dive into all the tail ends and weird sections of my recordings and see what could be done with these forgotten sections of audio, often which contain such strange sections of wonder unattended — imperfect on their own but full of such incredible sounds to gather and use in new ways.
now I often create tracks by taking the entire session recording and treating it like a piece of tape that I then cut up in the computer and layer on top of itself (imperfectly, so it's a little woozy, out of time and phase). this leads to a sort of ghosts within ghosts within ghosts sound of slight variabilities, shifting textures, and little moments overlapping and interacting with each other.
speaking of tape, real tape as well was involved — the sounds in this song were entirely made with the @ondemagnetique OM-1, an instrument that uses a hacked cassette player that when you press a key (or send it a sequence by control voltage) changes the speed of the cassette playback to change the pitch of the sound playing. you have different tapes with different sounds where an entire side of the tape is one drone sound that you then play to different pitches and rhythms by the machine. it's super cool and makes beautiful and startling electric organic sounds.
latent is the siren-like introduction to FOREST VORTEX. the sound in the air — of the air — that reaches out and entrances you, that draws you in, in search of knowledge, with devotion to beauty and light.
