Happy Halloween week!
Amazing Pumpkin Carving Workshops held at the Art room, Main OT in collaboration with the Walled Garden.

It was a great opportunity to celebrate a seasonal event with great engagement of service users and staff. The results were great and will be displayed at the Walled garden this week.
Thank you all who participated!

I visited Bethlem Museum of the Mind last week at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, which records the lives and experiences and celebrates the achievements of people with mental health problems. What a wonderful museum - thought-provoking, sensitive and informative. I highly recommend it!

Bethlem Royal Hospital is believed to be the world’s oldest psychiatric hospital, first established in 1247, though it has only been on its current grounds since 1930.

In the 17th & 18th Century, it was considered one of the sights of London with set days that the public could visit!
There was a collection box for donations, and perhaps the hospital governors hoped people would have compassion for the ‘lunatic poor’ and think ‘there but for the grace of god go I’. As we know, mental illness affects 1/4 people at any one time and 1/3 people across a lifespan.
However, some people also saw it as a form of entertainment; a #freakshow of sorts. In 1770, the governors introduced a ticketing system to try and weed out those who were visiting for that reason, and eventually these public visits were stopped altogether.
Even today, mental ill health is often still seen as a form of entertainment with ill-advised movies, TV programmes, and Halloween costumes.
As I said before, #museumofthemind at #royalbethlemhospital is definitely thought-provoking and worth a visit. I’m still reflecting on what I saw and felt there.

I’d rather sleep my whole life away than have you keep me from dreaming 🎶

I’m still reflecting on my recent trip to #museumofthemind at #bethlemroyalhospital - it was fascinating, thought-provoking, deeply moving, and also painful at times by triggering memories of difficult experiences working for and with mental healthcare systems. Though I would still highly recommend a visit if you’re ever nearby.

Recently went to #bethlemroyalhospital #museumofthemind as part of my few days in London.

Whilst there, I bought a small guidebook of the beautiful hospital grounds, which was once the Monks Orchard Estate. On my walk around, I was treated to several sightings of this magnificent fox, and took my first ever photos of one 😍 #feelinggrateful

Now open @bethlem_museum 'The Passions of Richard Dadd Revisited' features @marktitchner 's 'Some Questions About Us' 2019, with graffiti added by person/s unknown 2020.

Titchner originally produced the work as part of our #MentalHealthandJustice project, it was exhibited at the perimeter of the Bethlem Hospital grounds where it was graffitied with the words 'RIP Seni'.

The words refer to Olaseni Lewis, the young Black man who died under police restraint at Bethlem Hospital in 2010. Seni's family have spent the last decade pressing for the circumstances of his death to be made public, and campaigning for change in the way psychiatric emergencies are handled.

The work is shown with Richard Dadd's 'Grief or Sorrow' holding open a space "amidst the passion of campaigning, for mourning the loss of Seni and others - commonly Black men - who have died in similar circumstances."

See the exhibition Wednesday - Friday and the first and last Saturday of the month until 27 November.

Last week we hosted #TendingtoCare 2021, a one-day programme of outdoor events open to service users and staff at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.

The Clay-a-thon was hugely popular with many people staying hours to create a communal clay landscape with @kartadharma. We’d like to thank all the artists that took part in the day, to the music charity @keychangesmusic for their sweet sounds, to the Bethlem Writing group for their insightful words, to the @bethlem_main_ot Walled Garden for their refreshing drinks made with ingredients from the garden, the @bethlem_museum for the fascinating tour and everyone who stepped up to the Open Mic!

Many service users and staff said how much they enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, and the chance to socialise and enjoy some art and music.

Images: 1) Courtney's artwork installed n the ground of Bethlem Royal Hospital, 2) Three jugs of water filled with fruit and herbs from the OT Walled Garden, 3) Artist Karta Kaur working on the communal clay sculpture, 4) On of the open mic performances 5) Detail from the clay-a-thon 6) The grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital in the sunshine.

Willem van Genk, "Metro Station Opera" (detail), 1964, india ink, ballpoint, watercolour and collage on paper, 67,5 x 160 cm, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam

Willem van Genk (1927–2005) is a Dutch Art Brut artist whose works – drawings, paintings and model buses – entered the Lausanne museum in the 1980s.

In his early years, van Genk used drawing as an escape hatch from his everyday life and a means of "travelling" via imaginary cityscapes. As an adult, he settled in The Hague, where he could finally confront his childhood dreams with reality, in particular on visits to major European capitals. In his drawings, then his paintings on large varnished wooden panels, he began using complex cut-up and collage processes, and was directly inspired by his travels, notably in the former USSR, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Cologne and Prague. Megacities and their characteristic means of transport would become his favourite subjects.

Willem van Genk - Megalopolis
