MB Hanrahan, 2021 @mbhuniverse
"The roots of Las Palmas reach back to a Mexican housewife named Rosa Ramirez in the 1920's in Ventura, CA. Working out of her home she began selling enchilada sauce made from a family recipe to friends and neighbors and eventually opened the Ramirez and Feraud Chili Company. In 1923, Las Palmas was established and began to offer a number of can Mexican foods and sauces. Ramirez and Feraud Chili Company, located at 108 N. Garden, employed many Westside Ventura workers for many years."
The Tortilla Flats Legacy Murals are an amazing public art project, spearheaded by MB Hanrahan and Moses Mora, which feature 11 different images of the lives of Tortilla Flats residents who were displaced in the 1950s when the 101 Freeway was built through the west end of Ventura. It is being painted on the 1903 building at the corner of Main and The Ave, which at one time housed a bakery, a barbershop, and numerous markets that served the Tortilla Flats residents.
It is funded entirely by private sponsors.
The original Tortilla Flats murals were created in memory of Ventura's first neighborhood, a melting pot of Chumash, Latinos and other mixed Spanish races who came here in the 1910s as they fled the Mexican Revolution; impoverished white “Okies” who escaped the Dust Bowl that choked the southern prairies in the 1930s; Asians and, later, a small but vibrant African American community. The origins and boundaries of Tortilla Flats are uncertain, in part, because it shifted with the years. The Shore Acres Trailer Park, also known as “Okies Flats,” on the old River Street was considered the western end. Main Street is the unofficial northern boundary and Seaside Park the southern fringe. The eastern flank is fuzzier; some say it was Figueroa Street, but others push it farther east to Palm Street.

The Museum of Ventura County is hosting a reception on June 12, 2021 (tomorrow!) from 3p to 5p, to celebrate the opening of it's newest exhibit:
The Weed Project – “Outlaws of the Super Bloom & Crimes We Commit in the Garden," featuring13 botanical paintings with an ecological message, by Charlene Spiller.
There will be refreshments and a no-host bar. Visitors will also be encouraged to explore the new and refreshed Children's Garden featuring new murals by MB Hanrahan @mbhuniverse #mbhanrahan
Admission is free with registration at http://bit.ly/SpillerBotanical
In the macro-style paintings of The Weed Project, with its vivid lines, and vibrant palette, Charlene Spiller draws a plumb line between art and science. She creates a new category of “bloom,” challenging our expectation of what constitutes beauty, while pollinating our minds with provocative thoughts about our health, the health of our planet, and the bottom-line of a multibillion-dollar corporation, with a multibillion-dollar legal-relief reserve.
This exhibit will be on display through August 29, 2021.

The latest covid restriction orders that came out today have left me discouraged and straining my eyes for the finish line.
But one thing is clear, we are all essential moving parts of this engine that keeps us going day to day.... we all have a part to contribute whether it be in the "front line" or "behind the scenes." We will get to the other side of this together. #venturastrong
THANK YOU from the bottom of my ❤️ ...
"You're the engine that makes all things go
And you're always in disguise, my hero
I see your light in the dark
Smile in my face when we all know it's hard
There's no way to ever pay you back
Bless your heart, know I love you for that
Honest and selfless
I don't know if this helps it but
Good Job
You're doing a good job, a good job
Don't get too down
The world needs you now
Know that you matter
Matter, matter yeah...." ~Alicia Keys

Ventura, CA performance artist MB Hanrahan was featured in bric 10, a small format zine produced at
the time in Southern California.Steve Aguilar's conceptual photography documented MB in both angelic and satanic postures of existence.⠀
.⠀
MB also performed and featured a mural and a painting in Bad Exhibition: Value in Art at Art City Gallery in Ventura, 2018. ⠀
.⠀
MB's prolific work as a muralist documenting the oral tradition of generations of Latino in the Tortilla Flats of Ventura greatly enriches us, as well. Rarely do we find an artist who works this hard, in so many genre, who's message stays fresh and raw.⠀

Ah, here's one of the classic issues of bric(k) zine, 'brick 7:
art/death limited sidereally,' released in 2005. Words are by kurt, and images are by Steve Aguilar. In this issue, Aguilar includes studies of muralist and performance artist MB Hanrahan as well as the late painter and spoken word performance artists, gauvin. Each issue of this zine's limited run, which is ongoing and has 19 issues to date, is handmade and hand signed. ⠀
