During the summer of 2014 Sturgill Simpson was generating quite a considerable buzz following the recent release of his widely heralded sophomore album 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music'. Produced by the burgeoning Nashville-based starmaker Dave Cobb, Simpson cut 'Metamodern Sounds...' in four days and delivered a genuine modern country revelation. The Kentucky-native's outlaw vocal intonation was to the fore and harked back the halcyon days of '73 and Waylon Jennings' 'Honky Tonk Heroes'. Despite obvious parallels with this particular era of 'outlaw' country, this superlative collection of songs stood out as equal parts original and ambitious incorporating influences such as Motown, Soul, Blues and Psychedelia.

The aforementioned buzz saw Sturgill make his bow on the late night circuit as he ripped through album track 'Life of Sin' on the Late Show with David Letterman. Simpson's band -  Laur Joamets (lead guitar), Miles Miller (drums) and Kevin Black (bass) - absolutely crushed it and the performance inspired Dave to declare, “Commonwealth of Kentucky, ladies and gentlemen. That’s all you need right there."

Brilliant album and this Vinyl Me Please reissue sounds great, only issue is a locked groove on the run-in to Side 2. Had to lift the needle over it. It wasn't in the music, just on the edge, so it didn't impact the music itself but still, I expect better from VMP. Anyone else have this issue? For years I used to think that playing slide with your fingers was the right thing to do. There are a few benefits of playing slide with your fingers.. It's easier to mute the strings you don't want to hear and it reduces overtones. But sometimes the sound of slide playing with a pick works really well. Especially when you are combining it with regular playing behind the slide. I've come to this realization when I heard the album 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music' by Sturgill Simpson. Laur Joamets played some of the best slide guitar I've ever heard on that album. He played a lot of slide stuff with a pick an he made it sound awesome. In 2019 I did two lessons with him in Nashville and since then I've been working on this country style of slide playing... Check out his playing! And the album...
