If you are in La Fortuna and are considering traveling to Monteverde or vice versa you’ll probably hear that the best way to travel between both destinations is via JEEP BOAT JEEP (JBJ)

JBJ is essentially a shuttle that picks you up from your place of stay and takes you to the boat dock. When you cross the river, they tell you which shuttle to board to bring you to your next place of stay. It’s not necessarily an actual “Jeep” either they are generally Turismo vans that can carry anywhere from 6-10 passengers. When you take this option you are only allowed two bags (suitcase and carry-on) no excessive amount of bags or backpacks per person. Otherwise, the company might recommend a private or shared shuttle option (no boat) skipping the scenic and funner route. The cost for this? If you purchase in La Fortuna or Monteverde town from an authorized seller it’ll probably run you $25.00. I prepaid for the service via an online retailer and spent $43.00 for the same service. PRO TIP: Buy transfers in town!

There was no bathroom, so a couple of us scampered off into the surrounding jungle to do our business; Andy went after me. Not long after he emerged, he said he thought he might have a bug on his neck. Imagine my complete surprise when I looked down and there was a scorpion on his shoulder! 🦂✨
It all happened so quick. Before realizing what it was, he tried to swipe it off and ended up getting stung on the finger. That’s when I saw it, and exclaimed “holy shit, it’s a scorpion!” By this point, I could already see his finger swelling up so I knew I had to act quick before it stung him again on the neck. Before I could even find a stick to get him off with, I impulsively swiped the scorpion off with my bare hand. I think his stinger brushed my hand, as well, because I could feel a little stinging sensation but not as bad as the sting that Andy had incurred.
And that is how we learned that there are actually no scorpions in that part of the world venomous enough to kill you! Just feels like a bad bee sting. I snapped a few photos then grabbed a leaf which I used to get the lil bugger off the foot path, so that he would not get stepped on. We were in his territory, after all, not the other way around.
The boat ride across Lake Arenal was beautiful & allowed some pretty magnificent views of the volcano 🌋
The lake itself is completely man-made, used for hydroelectric energy. If you didn’t know, Costa Rica sustains on about 90% green energy, in various forms. Just another reason it’s one of my favorite places!

We ended up parting ways with our friend who had the rental car, so we had to find an alternative route to our destination. We could have taken a bus or rented an Uber, but both options were a little more expensive than we were hoping. Fortunately, after a little research, we came upon the taxi-boat-taxi; also known as jeep-boat-jeep to the locals. You take a taxi from Monteverde, to a boat which takes you across Lake Arenal, then another taxi to your final destination once you reach the Arenal region. Not only was it the cheapest (only $25 a person!) but it was the quickest and also the most scenic 🚕🛳🚕
We shared the “taxi” ride~ which was neither a taxi nor jeep, and really more like a shuttle van~ with two lovely Canadian couples who made for some really great conversation. Hilariously enough, we talked mostly about the economy & American politics. At one point the driver even stopped & let us get out so that we could enjoy the beautiful scenery. One of the Canadians was kind enough to take our photo at the vista point 🌸⛰
Overall, I think it was absolutely the best option and I’m so glad we put in the time & research in to find it! •
