This meringue in stone is the #heddastone , or Headdathat has been dated to the 750s.
Described as #middlesaxon it is part of the rare artistic patrimony of #mercia , and in particular #Medeshamstede , the #anglosaxon name for #peterborough and the home of a school of sculpture until a viking raid of 864. Monks and abbotts murdered, it was 100 years before the town reawoke.

Castor, Peterborough
Castor is known internationally as the centre of an important Roman settlement along the Nene valley west of Peterborough.
The herringbone stonework visible in the rectory wall is the remains of the Roman palace (c. 250 AD) or praetorium (underneath the churchyard and surrounding area). This was the second largest Roman building in Britain replacing an earlier first century villa.
The church while seeming ancient itself was then built on the site of the Roman courtyard. St Kyneburgha, daughter of King Penda of Mercia founded a double convent (men and women) on the site in the Celtic tradition bringing monks from Lindisfarne and was the first Abbess. After being sacked by the Vikings the church functioned as a Saxon minster church and was rebuilt by the Normans c1100. The tower is probably the finest Romanesque parish church tower in England.
Other items of interest pictured include a Roman pagan alter, the sculptures on the capitals of the Norman Tower shafts and the Saxon carving from the 8th C in a very similar style to the Hedda stone from our previous post on Peterborough Cathedral.

Behind the main altar in Peterborough Cathedral, in an alcove of the Lady Chapel, lies an ancient stone carving:
the Hedda Stone. This medieval carving of 12 monks, six on each side, commemorates the destruction of the Monastery and the death of the Abbot and Monks when the area was sacked by the Vikings in 864. #england #peterboroughcathedral #heddastone

So this is the Hedda stone. A depiction of the Viking raids on what is now Peterborough soil and, being from 870AD, is the oldest thing that Bearemy has touched paws with.

Inspired by details of the 8th century Hedda Stone (I removed the #knotwork and just did a #sketch of the animal).
