Even though most people in the UK, where I live, are well acquainted with Rioja wine, I personally tend to prefer other wine regions of Spain. This one is from a tiny region called 'Toro' that was revived by a second wave of younger, more innovative winemakers about 20 years ago. Finca La Rana is a perfect example of that: a wine made from a terroir of pretty old grapes ('Tinta de Toro'), which are now grown, harvested, and turned into wine respecting the principles of organic agriculture.
The result is this indulgent, yet very drinkable wine: extremely aromatic on the nose (berries, tobacco, dark chocolate, and a hint of vanilla), but with a light, a almost mineral finish in the mouth. An absolute treat for the last Saturday night before going back to school on Monday.
