The founders of Mas Alta, Michel and Christine Vanhoutte hail from Belgium. They became enamored with early wines they tasted from Priorat and decided to relocate to the small village of Vilella Alta with the goal of establishing their own estate.

With help from world class importer Eric Solomon, Winemaker Bixente Oçafrain and World-renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie created Black Slate La Vilella Alta by selecting Garnacha and Carinyena grown on both licorella (schist) and clay limestone soils. A blend of old and young-vine fruit with small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. At the core of the estate are old-vine Garnacha and Carinyena that are up to 100 years old in age!

Deep purple, full body, jeweled clarity, micro thin legs. Serve @ 67F.

High smoke, black plum, blackberry, cherry and lavender nose. Decant 1 hour adds cocoa, nutmeg and mint.

Dry mouth entry gushes black plum, blackberry and black cherry. Medium acidity. Very agile mid: High oak toast, vanilla, espresso, pepper, tobacco and black licorice.

Graphite minerality, ash, leather and chewy oak tannins.

Overnight grants a creamy long close: Black fruit, dark chocolate and licorice.

Aftertaste: Mint and cocoa.

Those who know me know my affection for Grenache. Stylistically versatile, great with an array of food or delicious on its own and can grow just about anywhere. I don’t however enjoy the over extracted, high alcohol, uber ripe versions that warmer regions of California, France and Spain can produce. So i was a tad wary going in on this beauty knowing how hot it is in and around Madrid and how I typically prefer the leaner fresher expression of Grenache. I remember all those Jorge Ordonez numbers in the early 2000’s from Jumilla and La Mancha that Parker lost his mind over and I too loved them. Fruity and rich AF, inexpensive but decadent and well made. These days i can’t even begin to process that style of wine as they literally physically hurt my palate….Well this wine is not that and i was happily surprised.
Beautiful bright and light garnet color with an almost tangerine hue to the outer edges. Briary strawberry, raspberry and floral aromas explode in the glass supported by a tenacious earthy wild herb concoction. In the mouth a light, pretty and playful mix of red fruits dance over the palate with no discernible wood with a definite crushed chalky dust that frames the back end with a long lively finish of stunningly juicy citrus edges.
Is this a serious wine? Yes. Is this a cocktail hour wine on a hot day? Yes it’s that too. Complex? I’d say so even though it’s personality seems to be that of a European village quaffer which it is, just so much more though
Overall it’s just a gorgeous fresh expression of Grenache grown in area where they usually go for a hedonistically ripe style. And here’s the best news. It retails for around $20. Ridiculously delicious wine
