I’m building an “Echo Matic” pedal, which will turn any triple head cassette recorder into a tape delay effect! It’s sort of a poor man’s “Space Echo”. I always wanted a real Space Echo, but used ones are currently around $2500. That’s a little too expensive for me. I’m glad I bought this Marantz tape recorder just before prices started going up on them. The Space Echo is such a classic sound effect! Bands like Pink Floyd, Radio Head, and Bob Marley used them extensively on their records! Going to build a second #echomatic tape delay from a 3 head #marantz recorder.
The first one (in the picture) was working nicely but the wiring and circuit inside were a mess! I wasn’t entirely happy with knowing that :)
This time the circuit is DIY based on the original schematics, implemented on a piece of PCB which will fit in the tape battery compartment. I’ll also use thinner wires to go to the pots on the tape front panel, just like in my first unit.

Well after an absolutely grueling 24 hours of tinkering with the Echo-Matic, I finally got it working perfectly with the cassette decks internal power supply.
And it’s friggin glorious. I also decided to take the advice of Frippertronics maverick @hainbach101 and whipped out my fostex x-12 for some fireside ambience 🔥 (no idea why...this just kinda reminded me of the music from those Dark Souls games). I stacked four tracks of fifths using a microkorg patch, recording on a tape loop via the x-12 on slow(ish) speed settings in order to get that glorious tape grain (thanks @user.173 for the tip on how to mod the motor speed for this!). I then gradually brought each set of fifths in-out of the mix to emphasize the various intervals at different points. 🤓

The Echo-Matic: this is a well-known build, attempted by many circuit benders.
I really liked the design of the tape echo made by @scttcmpbll so my first build looks remarkably similar.
It has been such a saga, designing and redesigning my circuit board, printing it, installing it, testing it, having the motor’s regulator changed, retesting it, and so on.... But FINALLY it’s coming together. There is still a fair amount of noise coming through to there is clearly a grounding issue I need to fix tomorrow. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with this. I may add a hi pass and lo pass filter but first I will get this thing cooking!
