I thought I was just gonna take a photo of this lovely little butterfly on a pretty flower.
However, I got to witness a whole micro-story! Click through the photos to see the drama unfold.

Photo 1. A pearl crescent (Phyciodes tharos) on a coreopsis flower in coastal NC. It’s a smallish butterfly with a wingspan that is only about 3.5 cm wide.

Photo 2. I noticed a second pearl crescent butterfly in the foreground that was sitting and behaving strangely. So I shifted my focus to it.

Photo 3. The second pearl crescent was grabbed by a jumping spider! This spider is a male Colonus puerperus and looks very different from the female. It’s very small, smaller than a centimeter, and managed to take down a much larger prey item. While the butterfly had an unfortunate day, I felt lucky to get to see this all play out.
