Let’ remember what nature has to offer. Today, I left the quarantine for my dog walk and here’s the #edibleplants I came across— Jew’s/Arab Mallow (Chubeza), dandelion greens, nettles, wild mustard, and basil (not wild, but beautiful and huge—ironically by an empty medical facility). Stay well and eat your veggies. They are all around you. But consult a farmer, herbalist, naturopath, or knowledgeable #plantwitch before you attempt to eat any wild edibles on your own. Remember to ask permission before harvesting plants as much as you can. Also, remember to ethically harvest plants — take a little from a plant so it can continue to grow. I generally pick a few leaves from each plant when i find a cluster of plants together. Also, if she’s fighting with you, she has her reasons. Think drip irrigation, desalination and wastewater treatment, etc. Today, almost all produce needed for domestic consumption in Israel is locally grown and seasonal.

Most kids here are well aware of the seasonality of veggies and fruits, and of the actual miracle of stuff growing in a place like ours. Teaching the kids about healthy and wholesome eating connects us to the land and even to the Bible. Big like for that! :-) #landofmilkandhoney

This is the one we get our weekly veggie box delivery from.
I couldn’t think of a better family activity. Kids got their hands dirty in the soil pulling out carrots and beets 🥕🥕. And they couldn’t get enough of the fresh-from-the-field veggies, which they devoured by the handful in the visitors’ tent.
I love it how they know where real food grows.

The truth is, the KEY to being able to eat like this everyday is all about getting organized. Get into the kitchen and prepare some BASE INGREDIENTS. Bake some eggplant, roast some beets, parboil the carrots, throw some cauliflower and sweet potatoes into the oven (and whilst your fiddling around with all that make a pot of soup- it’s still kind of winter). And voila, each day can be an exciting mix and match of wholesome goodness. JUST ADD SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROTEIN. Today I fancied an onion omelette.
