I LOVE THIS WINE. It gives me everything I want in a great Bordeaux without the crazy price. While many lower-priced Bordeaux fall short, this one delivers on the money! Full disclosure, I bought a case of it myself. This is the home estate for Bruno-Borie of Ducru-Beaucaillou and the wine is a tribute to his mother.

I tasted this last fall with some friends in DC at a great Bordeaux tasting that was in town. This was at the Ducru-Beaucaillou table (maybe my favorite Bordeaux producer) and I ALWAYS like to see how the little wines of the top producers stack up against their top wines. This was by far the best little wine of any producer there that day that included some heavy hitters, Palmer, Cos d'Estournel, Lynch-Bages, Montrose, Calon-Segur, VCC, Mouton, etc.

12 months in 25% new French oak

Grapes: 75% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

Château Fourcas-Borie was created when Bruno Borie (owner of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou) purchased Fourcas-Dumont in late 2008. The property originated from the union of the estates of Clos du Fourcas and Moulin du Bourg, which are among the oldest vineyards of the village located on the north end of Listrac-Médoc.

The 30 hectares of vineyards are planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot on a terroir of clay and limestone. The hilltops of Moulin du Bourg and Fourcas stretch out over 37 acres (15 hectares) on the north edge of the château and have shallow gravelly soils on clay subsoil. The other half of the vineyard lays on a clay-limestone soil. On average, the vines are 30 years of age and due to the differing plots and soil structures.

The perfume offered tobacco, earth, truffle, smoke, cassis and sweet cherry scents. Medium bodied and soft in texture, the wine one the palate gave plume, tart cherries and strawberries. Very nice length. This is juste an amazing wine. In the meantime it is so young and could deliver a delicious wine-tasting in 50 years from now!

This year they are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the marriage of Marie Desjeans to Jacques de Bergeron, which brought the property Maucaillou (subsequently changed to Beaucaillou) into the family; the rest is history.

Nicola says: "This year we met a new wine, Haut Médoc Madame de Beaucaillou – named in honour of Bruno’s mother – which was made from fruit across all their Haut Medoc vines, including those in Listrac. Bruno described this as his ‘friends and family wine – with roast chicken on a Sunday’; couldn’t have put it better myself!

As of this year, Lalande Borie no longer exists by name and will be called Le Petit Beaucaillou du Ducru Beaucaillou. Two reasons – to differentiate it from his brother’s second wine, Lacoste Borie, but more importantly because it is Ducru’s third wine and Bruno wants that to be clear – he is very proud of the wine, and rightly so – it will continue to figure in my personal cellar with its new name.

The superstars of the tasting were, of course, Croix Ducru Beaucaillou and the grand vin, Ducru Beaucaillou. Intense, brooding, dark and voluptuous, Croix is so obviously a chip off the same block and at less than a quarter of the price usually it is phenomenal value, whilst the grand vin is all of that and more; truly fabulous, and a wine which last for years to come.
