In reading old catalog pages, it appears that they were sold with 15" straight hatchet handles, but with the weight, it is more of a small axe! It seems that it would be tiring to use one handed, even if you choked up on the handle. So, which do you think would be more useful? Hatchet or Axe?

I used a green hickory log that had a lot more knots than it looked like it had when it was standing.
The only time a power tool touched it was when I used my saw to buck it because it was getting dark. I used axes to fell it and hew it. I really should have let it season but I wanted to try it.
It was definitely one of the harder things I've done with hand tools but it was still a lot of fun!
The axes in the box are what I used to fell and score the log and the last video is of all the tools I used to hew it.

I got my forge going and flattened the bevel to a single again. It annealed and softened so i stuck it in the forge again, and oil quenched the edge. When the colors started to show yellow towards the edge, i stuck it fully into the oil and then fully cooled with water. Then i ground it down with a hand grinder, and sharpened with stones and strop. It has many more years of life than if i just ground off the poor sharpening from the previous owner. I had a handle that came off an old camp hatchet that the head split in two and i stuck it on and made a wedge from poplar this morning. I tested its squaring ability on some ash and it is so much easier to make flat surfaces than a double beveled hatchet. The last two picture are before pictures.

Their Aroostook line of tools with the rooster as mascot. Talk about quality! Inlaid steel, carbon plate added to the poll. I haven't been able to date this but it's damn old I know that. Wm. Baxter really wanted people to know this was his axe and therefore stamped his name on it 4 times near the poll. Love these interesting ones! 👍🍻

One thing I love about #restoringoldtools is playing detective about the piece, and the kind of life it has had. There is minimal stamping on this little #broadaxe , all I can see is a “2” on the shaped side of the blade. No makers mark, unfortunately.

I can tell that this was a #wrappedeyeaxe because of seeing the weld in the front section of the axe eye and disappearing into the blade. This gives a bit of an indication of age. I know that this is intended for right-handed use, the blade has a flat side and an beveled side, because of the damage done to the pointed ends of the cheeks (the section which wraps around the handle). Based on the level of mushrooming on the poll of the axe it’s been hammered on a lot...something you’re not supposed to do, use a wedge not your axe.

So I’ll dress all the mushrooming, scrub the rust off, and clean up the inside surfaces of the eye. There are several areas where steel has been beaten in, which could cause me problems when trying to fit a new handle.

Aroostook was one of their tool lines. This has an inlaid bit and a carbon steel poll welded on. I don't recall ever seeing this rooster on an edged tool before which makes it pretty cool. The edge was somewhat damaged so I fixed it and polished it up razor sharp. Hung on the hickory stick it came with.

Might add a piece of cord yet. This one for the broad hatchet has been floating around for months, but needed it travel ready for the spoon moot (adornments will need to wait). Also, last axe session made me realize that I really need to change the handle on the broad hatchet. In the kit you get a New Old Stock (NOS) Hartwell Bros. handle, a Germantown Tool Works broad hatchet head, and the original wood and metal wedges that came with the handle. The handle is 16" long and designed for Broad or Bench hatchets as it states on the side of the handle. The hatchet head weighs 1 3/4 lbs. and has a 4 1/2" edge. The handle is in pristine condition and the grain orientation is almost completely parallel for you grain enthusiasts. The hatchet head is in decent condition for how old it is (100 yrs old). It has no cracks or major chips. The poll is in really good shape with no mushrooming. The edge has some wear on the toe but is still in good condition. It is nice and flat on the back side for all your hewing needs. A little work on the edge with a file will get it back to where you need it to be.
